How safe is the Chesapeake Bay Bridge?

By whatsupevents

The Baltimore Sun wrote today that Maryland Senator E.J. Pipkin is raising questions about the safety of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge, noting that the barrier corrosion repairs that will be snarling traffic for the next ten weeks might not have happened without discoveries made after the August 10 tractor-trailer crash:

” Pipkin said the decision to close the bridge during the Labor Day holiday weekend ‘conveys a sense of doubt about the current status of the bridge’s safety. One is forced to ask: What else is there about the bridge’s stability that has not been discovered? What else do we not know?’ he said.”

Readers, what do you think? How do you feel about the safety of the bridge, and how situation is being handled?

Every time I cross the bridge I wonder and I worry. Will I make it over to the other side?
The current situation of closing part of the bridge is very troubling and inconvenient, to say the least

It’s kind of a baffling situation for me.
After reading so much about the bridge repairs, hearing about horrific delays and having had my own (2 hour delay on Thursday afternoon returning to my home in Easton from Annapolis), I was understandably concerned, (ok, freaking out) as my sister came into BWI at 6 pm Friday night! I packed a picnic, anticipating being stuck in the car for hours.
Imagine my shock and glee as we sailed over the bridge at 7 pm with NO DELAY!

I still don’t understand it – did the back up clear due to the tolls being waived from 4-6 that afternoon?

And where was the traffic Monday morning when we returned to BWI? Again, clear sailing all the way!

And why were both lanes of the easrtbound span open Mpnday evening when I’m sure I read that one lane would be closed for 10 weeks?

Hmmmmm – it’s a mystery to me – all I can say is – wow, those guys work fast.
